Snowflake Moray Eel (Echidna nebulosa) – 4–7"
The Snowflake Moray Eel (Echidna nebulosa) is one of the most recognizable and popular moray eels in the marine aquarium hobby. Its cream-colored body is covered in dramatic dark markings with yellow accents, giving every specimen a distinctive appearance.
Compared with many larger and more aggressive morays, the Snowflake Moray is a manageable choice for aquarists looking to add an eel to a properly sized marine aquarium. It spends much of its time exploring rockwork or resting inside caves, often becoming especially active around feeding time.
Quick Care Guide
Scientific Name: Echidna nebulosa
Common Name: Snowflake Moray Eel
Approximate Size: 4–7 inches
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Diet: Carnivore
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons recommended
Reef Compatibility: With Caution
Adult Size: Approximately 24–30+ inches
Temperature: 74–78°F
pH: 8.1–8.4
Specific Gravity: 1.020–1.025
Aquarium Requirements
Snowflake Moray Eels need an established marine aquarium with plenty of caves, tunnels, and secure rockwork. Providing multiple hiding areas allows the eel to establish a comfortable territory while still giving it room to explore.
A tightly secured aquarium lid is essential. Moray eels are notorious escape artists and can squeeze through surprisingly small openings around lids, plumbing, cables, and overflow areas.
Rock structures should also be stable and securely positioned so the eel cannot dislodge them while moving through caves and crevices.
Feeding
Snowflake Moray Eels are carnivores and should be offered a varied diet of high-quality marine-based meaty foods.
Suitable foods include:
Shrimp
Krill
Squid
Clam
Mussel
Other appropriately sized marine meats
Feeding with long aquarium tongs is recommended. Do not hand feed moray eels.
A varied diet helps provide balanced nutrition and keeps the eel interested in feeding.
Temperament & Tankmates
The Snowflake Moray is considered semi-aggressive and is generally one of the more manageable morays kept in home aquariums.
It can be housed with appropriately sized marine fish that are unlikely to be swallowed or harassed. Very small fish should be selected carefully.
Crustaceans require additional caution. Snowflake Morays naturally prey on crustaceans, meaning ornamental shrimp, crabs, and similar invertebrates may become food.
Tankmate compatibility can vary between individual animals.
Reef Compatibility
Snowflake Morays generally do not intentionally consume corals, but they are considered reef compatible with caution.
Their size and movement through rockwork can disturb unsecured corals or aquascaping, and ornamental crustaceans may be eaten.
A securely constructed aquascape is especially important as the eel grows.
