Meet the blennies — a group of marine fish packed with personality, curious behavior and plenty of character for their size.
From hardworking algae grazers like the Lawnmower Blenny to colorful favorites like the Bicolor Blenny, these fish are known for hopping across rockwork, peeking out from caves and finding the perfect perch to watch everything happening around the aquarium.
Many blennies are hardy and adaptable, making select species excellent choices for newer marine aquarists as well as experienced reef keepers.
Blennies aren't just fun to watch. Many species naturally graze on algae and other growth found across established rockwork, making them useful members of a mature marine aquarium.
Diet varies between species, however, and even algae-grazing blennies may require supplemental feeding. Natural algae growth should not be considered a substitute for providing an appropriate, balanced diet.
Many blenny species are considered reef safe or reef safe with caution, depending on the individual species.
Most coexist peacefully with corals and other reef inhabitants, although some individuals may occasionally nip at fleshy corals, clam mantles or other sessile invertebrates.
Blennies may also become territorial toward other blennies or similarly shaped fish, particularly when aquarium space and hiding areas are limited.
Always review the individual product listing for species-specific compatibility and care requirements.
Blennies thrive in established marine aquariums with plenty of rockwork, caves, crevices and natural grazing surfaces.
Aquarium size, diet, temperament and adult size vary by species, so choose a blenny based on the needs of the individual fish rather than the family as a whole.
