The Orange Double Tile Starfish brings a distinctive mosaic pattern and slow-moving reef activity to an established saltwater aquarium. Also called the Icon or Double Sea Star, its outlined plates create a striking star-within-a-star look.
Best for experienced keepers. This is a delicate reef forager with demanding feeding and acclimation needs. It is not a quick fix for hair algae or a substitute for routine tank maintenance.
Care at a Glance
- Scientific name: Iconaster longimanus
- Care level: Difficult / advanced
- Temperament: Peaceful
- Reef compatibility: Generally reef compatible
- Diet: Surface-associated microorganisms, organic films and detrital material; supplemental marine foods if accepted
- Origin: Indo-Pacific reefs and rubble areas
- Placement: Mature live rock and accessible rubble surfaces
A Mature Reef Matters
Provide a well-established aquarium with extensive live rock, stable water quality and natural grazing surfaces. Newly cycled or overly clean systems may not provide enough nutrition. Keep with peaceful fish and avoid puffers, triggers, predatory wrasses and animals that pick at sea stars.
Feeding & Long-Term Care
Allow it to forage over established surfaces. Offer small pieces of marine shrimp or mussel near the animal and monitor whether they are accepted. Supplemental food is not a guarantee of success; natural food availability remains important. Avoid stocking multiple sea stars unless the system can support their feeding needs.
Water & Acclimation
Maintain approximately 72–78°F, specific gravity 1.023–1.025, pH 8.1–8.4 and alkalinity 8–12 dKH. Sea stars are sensitive to sudden changes in salinity, pH and oxygen. Follow the supplied acclimation instructions, acclimate carefully, keep submerged during transfer and avoid copper-based treatments.
What You Receive
One live Double Tile Starfish. Photos are representative, not WYSIWYG. Orange, red, tan and brown tones and mosaic pattern intensity vary by individual and lighting. Exact shipment size is not guaranteed; allow room for growth.
Useful Pairings
An acclimation drip kit, a reliable salinity tester and marine foods for monitored supplemental feeding help you prepare for this sensitive invert.
