Few marine fish have a transformation quite like the Juvenile Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator).
Juveniles display dramatic concentric bands of deep blue, black and white, creating an appearance completely different from the iconic yellow-and-blue adult. As the fish matures, those juvenile markings gradually transition into the striking horizontal pattern of the adult Emperor Angelfish. The species can reach around 15 inches in captivity, so that adorable juvenile eventually becomes a very large centerpiece fish.
This is a fish for aquarists prepared for its adult size, personality and long-term aquarium requirements, not simply the size of the juvenile arriving at their door.
Quarantined Before Shipping
This fish undergoes quarantine and preparation before shipment.
Depending on where the individual fish is within the quarantine process when your order is placed, additional time may be required before it is cleared for delivery.
Please allow up to 14 days for quarantine, observation and preparation prior to shipment.
Once the fish has completed the required process and is cleared for shipment, it will be scheduled for overnight delivery.
The quarantine period occurs before shipping and is separate from carrier transit time.
Pre-shipment quarantine provides an additional period of observation and preparation, but aquarists may still choose to follow their own quarantine protocol before introducing livestock into an established display aquarium.
Care Requirements
Scientific Name: Pomacanthus imperator
Common Name: Emperor Angelfish / Imperator Angelfish
Life Stage: Juvenile
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive
Diet: Omnivore
Adult Size: Approximately 15 inches
Reef Compatibility: Reef Safe With Caution
Recommended Setup: Large established marine aquarium
Emperor Angelfish require significant space as adults. Care references commonly recommend very large aquariums in the 180–225+ gallon range, and the species' long-term adult requirements should determine the aquarium—not its juvenile purchase size.
Incredible Juvenile-to-Adult Transformation
One of the most fascinating aspects of Pomacanthus imperator is its dramatic color transformation.
Juveniles feature curved and circular white and blue markings over a dark body. As they mature, this pattern changes substantially, eventually developing the yellow and blue horizontal bands, dark facial mask and yellow tail associated with adult Emperor Angelfish.
The juvenile coloration shown in product photography is not retained into adulthood.
Aquarium Setup
Provide a large, mature and stable marine aquarium with substantial swimming room along with rockwork, caves and sheltered areas.
This species becomes a large and assertive angelfish. Tankmates should be selected with its eventual adult size and semi-aggressive temperament in mind.
Purchasing a small juvenile for an undersized aquarium with plans to upgrade later is not recommended. The aquarium should be capable of accommodating the fish's long-term growth and behavioral needs.
Reef Compatibility
Reef Safe With Caution
Emperor Angelfish are not a dependable choice for aquarists who need guaranteed coral compatibility.
They naturally consume sponges and other encrusting organisms, and captive individuals may nip at or consume soft and stony corals, clam mantles and other sessile invertebrates.
Individual behavior varies, but customers with valuable coral and clam collections should understand the risk before purchasing.
Feeding
Emperor Angelfish require a varied omnivorous marine diet.
Offer quality marine angelfish preparations containing sponge material along with algae-based foods, nori, spirulina, mysis shrimp and other appropriately sized marine foods.
Natural populations feed heavily on sponges and other encrusting organisms, making dietary variety particularly important for this species.
Multiple appropriately sized feedings and a varied diet can help support healthy growth, body condition and coloration.
Appearance & Livestock Variation
Photos are representative of the species and life stage.
Because this is a living animal, size, coloration, markings and appearance naturally vary between individuals.
Juvenile Emperor Angelfish also undergo substantial changes in coloration and pattern as they mature.

Adults can reach approximately 15 inches and require a very large, established marine aquarium with adequate swimming room, rockwork and filtration.
Please consider the fish's adult requirements before purchasing and understand that reef compatibility cannot be guaranteed.
