Bring flowing movement, vibrant color, and an established colony look to your reef with this 10-Head Duncan Coral. Duncan Corals are popular LPS corals known for their large fleshy polyps, branching skeletal growth, and beautiful tentacles that create constant movement in the aquarium.
Unlike a small starter frag, this offering features approximately 10 heads, giving you a fuller, more established appearance from the start.
Duncans are also considered one of the more approachable LPS corals, making them an excellent choice for newer reef keepers while remaining a favorite in mature mixed reefs.
Quick Care Guide
Common Name: Duncan Coral
Scientific Name: Duncanopsammia axifuga
Coral Type: LPS Coral
Heads: Approximately 10
Care Level: Beginner
Temperament: Peaceful
Lighting: Low to Moderate
Water Flow: Low to Moderate
Placement: Lower to Middle Areas
Growth Form: Branching
Reef Compatible: Yes
Appearance & Growth
Duncan Corals feature large, fleshy polyps extending from a branching stony skeleton. When fully expanded, the individual heads create a lush, flower-like appearance with tentacles gently moving in the current.
As the coral becomes established, additional heads can develop from the branching skeleton, allowing the colony to become larger and fuller over time.
Because this specimen starts with approximately 10 heads, it can provide the appearance of an established Duncan colony without waiting for a small frag to grow out.
Placement
Place the Duncan on stable rockwork where it has room to fully expand.
Duncans are relatively peaceful compared with many LPS corals, but adequate space should still be provided between the colony and neighboring corals.
Keep future growth in mind when choosing its permanent location.
Lighting & Water Flow
Provide low to moderate reef lighting.
Duncans generally do not require the intense lighting associated with many SPS corals and can perform well in lower and middle areas of the aquarium.
Provide low to moderate, indirect water movement that gently moves the tentacles without continuously blasting the colony.
Excessive flow can prevent the polyps from fully extending.
Feeding & Nutrition
Duncan Corals receive much of their nutritional needs through photosynthesis but are also responsive feeders.
They can benefit from occasional supplemental feeding with appropriately sized foods such as:
Mysis shrimp
Finely chopped marine foods
Small meaty reef foods
Quality LPS coral foods
Target feeding is optional but may help support growth and development of additional heads.
Recommended Water Parameters
Temperature: 75–80°F
Specific Gravity: 1.023–1.026
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
As a stony coral, Duncan Coral uses calcium and carbonate to build its skeleton. Maintaining stable calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, salinity, and temperature will help support healthy growth.
Compatibility
Duncan Coral is generally considered a peaceful LPS coral and works well in mixed reef aquariums.
Provide enough space for the polyps to fully expand without touching neighboring corals.
Use caution with fish or invertebrates known to nip at fleshy LPS corals.
Size & Live Coral Notice
You will receive one Duncan Coral colony with approximately 10 heads.
Exact colony size, head size, coloration, branching structure, tentacle length, and overall appearance will naturally vary between specimens.
This is not a WYSIWYG listing. Product photos are representative examples and may show a different individual colony or a coral under different lighting conditions.
Duncan Corals may arrive contracted following shipment and can require time to acclimate and fully extend after introduction to the aquarium.
