From Coralife to Reef Octopus: My Protein Skimmer Upgrade Experience

A side-by-side comparison of the Coralife Super Skimmer 65 and Reef Octopus Classic 1000 HOB alongside a 54-gallon reef aquarium, highlighting a real-world protein skimmer upgrade experience.

From Coralife to Reef Octopus: My Protein Skimmer Upgrade Experience

After more than a year with the Coralife Super Skimmer 65, I upgraded to the Reef Octopus Classic 1000 HOB. My biggest surprises were the approximately 6-hour break-in period, easier maintenance, and consistently stable performance.

If you've been in the reef aquarium hobby for any length of time, you've probably asked yourself the same question I did:

Is upgrading to a premium protein skimmer really worth it?

For well over a year, my 54-gallon corner reef relied on the Coralife Super Skimmer 65. It helped maintain excellent water quality, removed dissolved organics effectively, and proved that you don't need the most expensive equipment to build a successful reef aquarium.

Eventually, though, I found myself wondering what a premium skimmer could offer. After spending countless hours researching and reading reviews, I decided to upgrade to the Reef Octopus Classic 1000 HOB Protein Skimmer.

Here's my honest experience after making the switch.

Before We Get Started

I want to make one thing very clear.

This is not a Coralife bashing article.

The Coralife Super Skimmer 65 served my reef aquarium well for a long time, and I don't regret purchasing it. It helped me learn the importance of protein skimming and kept my reef healthy.

I also continue to use a SeaClone (Instant Ocean) protein skimmer on my 90-gallon predator aquarium, and my Fluval Evo 13.5 still runs the Fluval PS2 Mini Protein Skimmer.

Every skimmer has its place, and every hobbyist has different needs and budgets.

This article is simply my personal experience after upgrading one of my reef systems.

Living With the Coralife Super Skimmer 65

Overall, the Coralife Super Skimmer 65 performed well. It consistently removed waste from the aquarium and helped maintain stable water quality.

Would I recommend it to someone looking for an affordable entry-level skimmer?

Absolutely.

However, after using it daily for well over a year, I became very familiar with some of its quirks.

One of the biggest challenges was the break-in period.

It took several weeks before the skimmer finally settled into consistent operation. During that time, I found myself making frequent adjustments while waiting for it to stabilize.

Another issue I encountered was the Venturi air intake.

Over time, the Venturi would slowly become clogged with salt creep and debris. At first, I didn't even realize what was happening. The skimmer gradually lost performance, and instead of checking the Venturi, I found myself making adjustment after adjustment before eventually discovering the real issue. Once I cleaned the Venturi, performance immediately improved.

Maintenance also became more difficult as time went on.

The collection cup used a twist-lock design that sealed securely, but after months of use it became increasingly difficult to remove. There were times when I actually had to use a pair of pliers just to loosen the collection cup enough to clean it.

None of these issues made it a bad skimmer.

They were simply things I had learned to live with over time.

Why I Decided to Upgrade

I wasn't looking for a skimmer that removed more waste.

I wanted a skimmer that was easier to own.

I was looking for:

  • Easier maintenance
  • Less time spent making adjustments
  • Better build quality
  • A shorter break-in period
  • More consistent day-to-day performance

After researching several options, I decided on the Reef Octopus Classic 1000 HOB.

The best compliment I can give this skimmer is that I spend less time thinking about it. Once it's dialed in, it quietly does its job, letting me spend more time enjoying my reef instead of constantly adjusting equipment.

First Impressions

The first thing I noticed was the overall quality.

Everything felt well built, thoughtfully designed, and easy to assemble.

Installation was straightforward, and within minutes the skimmer was running.

What impressed me the most was the break-in period.

Instead of waiting several weeks like I had experienced with my previous skimmer, the Reef Octopus settled in after roughly six hours.

Microbubbles were minimal from the start, and before long it was already producing dark skimmate.

That alone exceeded my expectations.

Maintenance Is Night and Day

One feature that doesn't receive enough attention is the collection cup.

Instead of twisting, fighting, and occasionally reaching for a pair of pliers, the Reef Octopus collection cup simply lifts off.

It sounds like a small improvement, but when you're emptying and cleaning your skimmer every week, those little conveniences make a huge difference.

Routine maintenance has become much faster and far less frustrating.

It's one of those features you don't truly appreciate until you've experienced both designs.

A Helpful Lesson I Learned

During my first week of ownership, I ran into one issue that I think is worth sharing.

After emptying the collection cup one day, the skimmer suddenly began overflowing.

Naturally, my first thought was that something had gone out of adjustment.

After a little troubleshooting, I found the real cause.

The coarse return sponge had collected enough debris to restrict water from flowing back into the aquarium. That restriction caused the water level inside the skimmer body to rise until it overflowed into the collection cup.

A quick rinse of the sponge immediately solved the problem.

Since then, I've added one simple step to my maintenance routine.

Whenever I'm cleaning algae from the aquarium glass or emptying the collection cup, I also inspect and rinse the return sponge if needed.

It only takes a few seconds and helps keep the skimmer performing consistently.

Coralife vs. Reef Octopus

After spending considerable time with both skimmers, here's my personal experience.

Feature Coralife Super Skimmer 65 Reef Octopus Classic 1000 HOB
Break-in Period Several weeks Approximately 6 hours
Collection Cup Twist-lock design Easy lift-off design
Venturi Maintenance Required periodic cleaning Consistent airflow so far
Adjustments Frequent fine tuning Mostly set it and forget it
Microbubbles More noticeable Minimal after break-in
Overall Maintenance More involved Much easier

Again, this doesn't mean one skimmer is good and the other is bad.

Both remove dissolved organics and help maintain a healthy aquarium.

The biggest difference is the overall ownership experience.

Is It Worth the Upgrade?

For me...

Absolutely.

Not because the Coralife failed.

Not because it stopped working.

Simply because the Reef Octopus offers a more refined experience.

The shorter break-in period, easier maintenance, thoughtful design, minimal microbubbles, and consistent performance have made reef keeping just a little more enjoyable.

Sometimes upgrading equipment isn't about replacing something that's broken.

Sometimes it's about making routine maintenance easier and spending more time enjoying your aquarium instead of adjusting your equipment.

For me, that's exactly what the Reef Octopus Classic 1000 HOB has done.

Who I Think This Skimmer Is Best For

After spending my first week with the Reef Octopus Classic 1000 HOB, I think this skimmer is an excellent choice for:

Reef Hobbyists Looking to Upgrade

If you've been using an entry-level protein skimmer and want something with a more refined design, easier maintenance, and more consistent performance, this is a worthwhile upgrade.

Medium-Sized Reef Aquariums

I think this skimmer is a great fit for reef tanks where a quality hang-on-back skimmer is needed without moving to a sump system.

Hobbyists Who Value Easy Maintenance

The lift-off collection cup, quick break-in period, and simple adjustments make routine maintenance much easier than what I experienced with my previous skimmer.

Reef Keepers Who Prefer Stability

Once dialed in, the Reef Octopus has required very little attention, allowing me to spend more time enjoying my aquarium instead of constantly adjusting equipment.

This May Not Be the Best Choice If...

If you're simply looking for the least expensive protein skimmer available, there are certainly more budget-friendly options.

However, if you're looking for a skimmer that combines quality construction, consistent performance, and easy maintenance, I believe the Reef Octopus Classic 1000 HOB is well worth considering.

Every aquarium is different, but based on my experience so far, this is one of those upgrades that improves not only water quality but also the overall reef-keeping experience.

Final Thoughts

One thing I've learned over the years is that there is no such thing as the perfect protein skimmer.

There are simply different skimmers for different hobbyists, different budgets, and different aquariums.

The Coralife Super Skimmer 65 proved that an affordable skimmer can successfully support a healthy reef aquarium.

The Reef Octopus Classic 1000 HOB has shown me what a premium skimmer can add to the overall reef-keeping experience.

If you're currently using an entry-level skimmer and wondering whether upgrading is worth it, my answer is simple:

You don't necessarily upgrade because your old skimmer isn't working. You upgrade because you want equipment that makes reef keeping easier, more consistent, and more enjoyable.

For me, that's exactly what this upgrade accomplished.
