Aquarium Requirements
Peacock Cichlids require a fully cycled freshwater aquarium with hard, alkaline water. Provide strong biological filtration and perform regular water changes to maintain consistently high water quality.
Create multiple caves, rock structures, visual barriers, and territories while preserving open areas for swimming. All rockwork should be placed securely because African cichlids may dig around the base of decorations.
A 75-gallon aquarium should be considered the minimum for this six-pack. A 90-gallon or larger aquarium provides additional swimming space and more opportunities to establish territories.
Temperament and Compatibility
Peacock Cichlids are generally less aggressive than many Mbuna species, but they remain territorial African cichlids. Individual temperament varies, and aggression may increase as the fish mature, establish territories, or begin breeding.
Because this is a mystery assortment, the sex ratio and exact varieties cannot be guaranteed. Closely observe the group after introduction and be prepared to separate or rehome an aggressive or heavily targeted fish if necessary.
Suitable tank mates may include other appropriately sized Peacock Cichlids, compatible Haplochromines, and carefully selected Lake Malawi cichlids with similar water requirements.
Avoid small community fish, delicate species, slow-moving fish, and animals that require soft or acidic water. Compatibility is never guaranteed.
Feeding
Offer a varied diet of quality African cichlid pellets or flakes supplemented with spirulina-based foods, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other appropriately sized frozen or prepared foods.
Avoid excessive amounts of rich, fatty, or high-protein food. Feed controlled portions that the fish can consume within a few minutes and remove uneaten food to protect water quality.
Acclimation
Keep the aquarium lights dim or turned off during acclimation. Gradually acclimate the fish to the aquarium’s temperature and water conditions, and never add shipping water to the main aquarium.
Introduce the group together whenever possible. Rearranging some aquarium decorations before introduction may help disrupt existing territories and reduce aggression.
Closely monitor all six fish during the first several days to confirm they are eating and that no individual is being excessively chased or prevented from accessing food.
