Preparing Your Dragon Root Wood
Natural wood should always be cleaned and prepared before being added to your aquarium or terrarium.
Before use we recommend:
-
Thoroughly rinsing the wood with warm water to remove loose debris.
-
Soaking the wood for several days to several weeks depending on its size.
-
Boiling smaller pieces when possible to help sanitize the wood, speed up the waterlogging process, and reduce excess tannins.
-
Performing water changes during the soaking process if excessive tannins are released.
Natural tannins are completely normal and may temporarily tint your aquarium water a tea like color. Many freshwater hobbyists intentionally use tannins to create beautiful blackwater environments that mimic natural habitats for Bettas, Tetras, and certain shrimp species.
If you prefer crystal clear water, premium filtration media such as Seachem Purigen and Seachem MatrixCarbon can help remove discoloration caused by tannins more quickly.
Larger pieces of Dragon Root Wood may require extended soaking periods before becoming fully waterlogged. Some pieces may initially float and can be temporarily weighed down until they naturally sink.
PLEASE NOTE
Dragon Root Wood is a natural product. No two pieces are alike. Shape, coloration, branching, thickness, and overall appearance will vary from piece to piece.
