IceCap High Capacity GFO Filter Media

Take phosphate control to the next level with IceCap High Capacity GFO Filter Media. Designed for serious reef keepers and high-demand aquarium systems, this premium-grade granular ferric oxide media removes phosphate and silicates faster, lasts longer, and produces less dust than standard GFO media.

Perfect for reef aquariums, SPS systems, fish only saltwater tanks, freshwater aquariums, African cichlid setups, planted tanks, and high bioload systems where nutrient control is critical.

What Is High Capacity GFO?

GFO stands for Granular Ferric Oxide, an iron-based filtration media used to absorb phosphate and silicate from aquarium water.

IceCap High Capacity GFO is chemically engineered to be:

• More dense
• More durable
• Longer lasting
• Higher capacity than standard GFO

This means you can remove more phosphate using less media while also reducing maintenance frequency.

Why Phosphate Control Matters

High phosphate levels can contribute to:

• Hair algae outbreaks
• Cyanobacteria growth
• Reduced coral coloration
• Slower SPS growth
• Cloudy water
• Excess nuisance algae
• Reduced overall water quality

Even if nitrate levels look acceptable, phosphate can still quietly fuel algae problems and negatively impact sensitive corals.

Learning Moment

In reef aquariums, phosphate is not the enemy an unstable phosphate is.

Corals still require nutrients to survive, but elevated phosphate levels can interfere with coral calcification and encourage nuisance algae growth.

Most reef aquariums target:

• SPS systems: approximately 0.02–0.05 ppm
• Mixed reefs: approximately 0.03–0.10 ppm

Reducing phosphate too aggressively can stress corals, so gradual adjustments and regular testing are extremely important.

Why Choose IceCap High Capacity GFO?

Unlike standard GFO, IceCap High Capacity GFO is physically harder and more resistant to breaking down into fine dust.

Features

• High-density phosphate-removal media
• Longer-lasting than standard GFO
• Higher adsorption capacity
• Removes silicates that contribute to diatoms
• Lower dust output
• Resistant to clumping and cementing
• Suitable for freshwater and saltwater aquariums
• Excellent for high-bioload systems
• Ideal for SPS-dominant reef tanks

Its increased durability also helps improve reactor performance by allowing more consistent water flow through the media.

How To Use

1. Rinse media with RO/DI water before use.
2. Place into:
   • Media reactor (recommended)
   • Media bag
   • Canister filter
3. Adjust reactor flow so the top layer gently tumbles.
4. Monitor phosphate levels regularly.
5. Replace media when phosphate levels begin rising again.

Recommended Dosage

• Start with approximately 1 tablespoon per 8–10 gallons of aquarium water.

Important Tip

If your aquarium currently has high phosphate levels, begin with a smaller amount of media to avoid reducing nutrients too quickly, which may stress corals.

Why High Capacity GFO Is Different

Standard GFO can sometimes:

• Break apart easily
• Create orange dust
• Clump together
• Require more frequent replacement

IceCap High Capacity GFO is designed to:

• Last longer
• Resist breakdown
• Maintain better reactor flow
• Provide more stable phosphate control over time

This makes it especially useful for:

• Large reef systems
• Heavy feeding schedules
• SPS-dominant tanks
• Fish rooms
• Aquarium maintenance companies

Great For

• Reef aquariums
• SPS coral systems
• Mixed reef tanks
• Fish-only saltwater systems
• Freshwater aquariums
• African cichlid tanks
• Planted aquariums
• Turtle tanks
• Pond systems
• High-bioload aquariums
