Hair algae putting up a fight? The Dolabella Sea Hare is a dedicated algae grazer that works its way over rockwork and other surfaces. This peaceful marine mollusk can help with filamentous algae in an established reef—but it needs a reliable food supply after the visible algae is gone.
Care at a Glance
- Scientific name: Dolabella auricularia
- Also called: Wedge or Blunt-End Sea Hare
- Care level: Advanced; stable, mature aquarium required
- Temperament: Peaceful
- Diet: Herbivore; hair algae and other filamentous algae
- Reef compatibility: Generally coral-safe with precautions
- Habitat: Indo-Pacific coastal shallows, seagrass and algae-covered rubble
Plan for Food, Space & Growth
This is a living animal, not a disposable algae treatment. Offer marine macroalgae or anchored dried seaweed once natural grazing declines, and confirm it is actually eating. Supplement acceptance varies; arrange a suitable algae-rich home if you cannot maintain its diet. Avoid new, small or very clean aquariums. Large adults can approach 16 inches, so plan for substantial growth and grazing space.
Setup & Compatibility
Provide established rockwork, sheltered resting areas and gentle to moderate indirect flow. Guard powerheads, overflow openings and pump intakes: its soft body is easily injured. Avoid puffers, triggers and other tankmates that bite or harass invertebrates. Severe stress can cause purple ink release; remove the cause, run fresh activated carbon and perform an appropriate water change.
Water & Acclimation
Keep temperature around 72–78°F, specific gravity 1.023–1.025 and pH 8.1–8.4, with stable reef water chemistry. Avoid copper medications and sudden salinity or temperature changes. Follow the livestock acclimation instructions supplied with your order.
What You Receive
