Adults develop brilliant yellow and electric-blue horizontal striping, a striking blue-black facial mask, and a commanding presence that makes them an incredible centerpiece for a large saltwater aquarium.

Emperor Angels become very large and require substantial swimming room, established rockwork, hiding areas, and excellent water quality. A 225-gallon minimum is a reasonable long-term recommendation for an adult specimen.

Feeding

Offer a varied diet including quality marine angelfish preparations, marine algae and seaweed, spirulina-based foods, mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and other suitable marine foods.

A diverse diet is particularly important for large marine angelfish, whose natural feeding behavior includes grazing on algae and various encrusting organisms.

Reef Compatibility

Emperor Angelfish should be considered reef safe with caution.

They may nip at or consume certain corals and sessile invertebrates, particularly fleshy LPS, soft corals, and clams. Individual behavior varies, but this species is best suited to large FOWLR systems or carefully planned reef aquariums where the owner accepts the risk of coral predation.
