Salifert Copper Aquarium Test Kit
Copper medications can save fish from devastating diseases such as marine ich and velvet, but only when used correctly. The Salifert Copper Test Kit allows you to accurately monitor copper levels during treatment, helping you maintain a therapeutic level that is effective against parasites while reducing the risk of overdosing your fish. The kit is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums and can detect copper levels from approximately 0.05 to 2.0 ppm.
What Is This Test Kit For?
The Salifert Copper Test Kit is designed to measure copper medication levels in aquariums during disease treatment.
Copper is commonly used to treat:
- Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon)
- Marine Velvet (Amyloodinium)
- Some external protozoan parasites
- Certain freshwater parasite outbreaks
Because copper levels can fluctuate due to water changes, filtration, substrate absorption, and decorations, regular testing is critical to ensure treatment remains effective.
Why Testing Copper Matters
Many hobbyists make the mistake of dosing copper and assuming the level stays where they put it.
Unfortunately, copper can be:
- Absorbed by rocks, sand, and decorations
- Removed by carbon and certain filter media
- Diluted through water changes
- Accidentally overdosed during adjustments
Too little copper may allow parasites to survive.
Too much copper can stress, injure, or even kill fish.
Testing is not optional during copper treatment..it is essential. Regular testing helps ensure the medication remains within the therapeutic range recommended by the manufacturer of your copper treatment.
IMPORTANT: Never Use Copper in Reef Aquariums
Copper should NEVER be dosed into a reef tank or any aquarium containing invertebrates.
Copper is toxic to:
- Corals
- Shrimp
- Crabs
- Snails
- Clams
- Sea stars
- Anemones
- Most other invertebrates
Copper can also be absorbed into live rock and substrate, potentially leaching back into the aquarium long after treatment has ended. This is why copper treatments should be performed in a dedicated quarantine or hospital tank whenever possible.
Best Practice
Treat fish in a bare bottom quarantine tank
Remove carbon and copper-removing media during treatment
Test copper levels regularly
Follow the medication manufacturer's therapeutic range
Perform treatment in a fish only environment
