The Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum) is a striking marine herbivore known for its dramatic oversized dorsal and anal fins, bold striping and impressive adult presence. When those fins are fully extended, the Sailfin displays the unmistakable profile that gives this species its name.
Young Sailfin Tangs may arrive relatively small, but this species becomes a large, active fish requiring substantial swimming room as an adult. It is best suited for aquarists prepared to provide the space, nutrition and long-term care required by a full-sized tang.
Approximate Size at Sale: 2.25–3.25 inches
Quarantined Before Shipping
This fish undergoes quarantine, observation and preparation before shipment.
Depending on where the individual fish is within the quarantine process when your order is placed, additional time may be required before it is cleared for delivery.
Please allow up to 14 days for quarantine and preparation prior to shipment.
Once cleared, your fish will be scheduled for overnight delivery. The quarantine period occurs before shipment and is separate from carrier transit time.
Pre-shipment quarantine provides an additional period of observation and preparation, but aquarists may still choose to follow their own quarantine protocol before introducing new livestock into an established display aquarium.

This Fish Gets BIG
Don't let the juvenile size fool you.
Sailfin Tangs can reach approximately 15 inches as adults and develop a tall body profile with enormous extended dorsal and anal fins. A juvenile may look comfortable in a smaller aquarium initially, but this species requires a large aquarium with substantial open swimming room for long-term care.
We recommend planning around the fish's adult requirements before purchasing, rather than purchasing a juvenile with the expectation of upgrading later.
Aquarium Setup
Provide a large, mature and well-established marine aquarium with open swimming areas and substantial rockwork.
Live rock provides both shelter and natural grazing surfaces, while open areas allow this highly active fish to swim comfortably.
Sailfin Tangs can become territorial, particularly toward other tangs and similarly shaped fish. Extra care should be taken when combining multiple surgeonfish, and aquarium size, aquascape and introduction order can significantly affect compatibility.
Reef Compatibility
Reef Safe
Sailfin Tangs are generally considered reef safe and can make excellent inhabitants of appropriately sized reef aquariums.
They spend considerable time grazing across rockwork and aquarium surfaces and generally leave healthy corals and ornamental invertebrates alone.
Feeding
Sailfin Tangs are primarily herbivorous and require a diet rich in marine algae and plant-based foods.
Provide regular access to dried marine algae or nori, along with spirulina-based foods and quality prepared diets formulated for marine herbivores.
Although they may readily consume meaty foods offered to other aquarium inhabitants, algae-based nutrition should remain a major part of their diet.
Frequent access to appropriate foods helps support healthy body condition, coloration and long-term health.
Natural Algae Grazing
Sailfin Tangs are active grazers and may help control certain algae growing throughout an established aquarium.
However, they should never be purchased solely as an algae-control solution. Their nutritional requirements continue even when nuisance algae becomes scarce, and supplemental feeding remains essential.
Appearance & Livestock Variation
Product photos are representative of the species.
Because every fish is unique, size, coloration, markings and overall appearance will naturally vary between individuals.
The fish received will generally fall within the listed approximate size range, but exact measurements and appearance are not guaranteed.

Before Ordering
The Sailfin Tang is a large surgeonfish, despite being offered here as a 2.25–3.25" juvenile.
We recommend an established aquarium of approximately 180 gallons or larger for long-term adult care, with substantial swimming room, mature rockwork and strong filtration.
Be prepared to provide an algae-rich diet throughout the fish's life and carefully consider compatibility when keeping it with other tangs.
