Aquarium Requirements
Because of their tall bodies and extended fins, Angelfish require an aquarium with sufficient vertical swimming space. A tall aquarium is preferable to a short or shallow setup.
Provide plants, driftwood, smooth rocks, vertical structures, and open swimming areas. Broad-leaf plants can provide cover and may also be selected as spawning sites by mature pairs.
Maintain stable water conditions with good filtration and gentle to moderate flow. Avoid extremely strong current that forces the Angelfish to struggle constantly while swimming.
Temperament and Tank Mates
Freshwater Angelfish are members of the cichlid family and may become territorial, particularly as they mature or form breeding pairs. Individual temperament may range from relatively peaceful to assertive.
Potential tank mates include:
-
Medium-sized tetras
-
Peaceful barbs
-
Corydoras
-
Peaceful plecos
-
Larger rasboras
-
Compatible gouramis
-
Other appropriately sized community fish
Avoid very small fish that may eventually be eaten, aggressive fin-nipping species, and fish that may damage the Angelfish’s long fins.
Compatibility is never guaranteed. Monitor all fish carefully and provide sufficient space, cover, and visual barriers.
Feeding
Angelfish are omnivores and should receive a varied diet. Offer quality tropical or cichlid flakes and pellets supplemented with frozen or freeze-dried brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized foods.
Feed controlled portions that the fish can consume within a few minutes. Remove uneaten food to maintain good water quality.
Acclimation
Keep the aquarium lights dim or turned off during acclimation. Gradually acclimate the fish to the aquarium’s temperature and water conditions, and never add shipping water to the main aquarium.
Provide a quiet environment after introduction and allow the fish time to settle before offering food. Temporary hiding or reduced coloration may occur while it adjusts.
