The Lawnmower Blenny (Salarias fasciatus) is one of the saltwater hobby's favorite algae-grazing fish, combining useful grazing behavior with an absolutely ridiculous amount of personality.

Also known as the Algae Blenny, this fish spends much of its day perched on rockwork and moving from surface to surface in search of algae and other edible growth. Its mottled brown, tan and gray coloration provides excellent camouflage among live rock, while its oversized eyes and expressive face make it a surprisingly entertaining aquarium resident.

Lawnmower Blennies are generally peaceful, reef safe and relatively hardy when maintained in a mature aquarium with adequate natural grazing and supplemental nutrition.

Quarantined Before Shipping

This fish undergoes quarantine, observation and preparation before shipment.

Depending on where the individual fish is within the quarantine process when your order is placed, additional time may be required before it is cleared for delivery.

Please allow up to 14 days for quarantine and preparation prior to shipment.

Once cleared, your fish will be scheduled for overnight delivery. The quarantine period occurs before shipment and is separate from carrier transit time.

Pre-shipment quarantine provides an additional period of observation and preparation, but aquarists may still choose to follow their own quarantine protocol before introducing new livestock into an established display aquarium.

Natural Algae Grazer

The Lawnmower Blenny earns its name from its habit of continually grazing across established rockwork.

It can be an excellent addition to a reef aquarium where natural algae growth is available, but it should not be purchased solely as a guaranteed hair-algae solution. Individual grazing behavior varies, and not every Lawnmower Blenny will consume every type of nuisance algae.

Think of its algae grazing as a benefit—not a replacement for proper nutrient management and aquarium maintenance.

Aquarium Setup

Provide a mature, established marine aquarium with plenty of live rock, caves, crevices and open surfaces for grazing.

Lawnmower Blennies commonly choose favorite perches and hiding locations within the rockwork, emerging throughout the day to explore and graze.

They are generally peaceful with unrelated tankmates but can become territorial toward other blennies and similar bottom-dwelling fish. Keeping a single Lawnmower Blenny is the safest choice for most aquariums.

A secure aquarium lid is also recommended because blennies are capable jumpers.

A Lawnmower Blenny can eventually consume available algae faster than the aquarium produces it. Supplemental feeding is essential when natural grazing becomes limited.

Offer a varied plant-focused diet including nori, marine algae, spirulina and quality algae-based prepared foods. Maintaining adequate nutrition is particularly important because individuals without sufficient natural or supplemental food can lose body condition.

Watch the fish's body condition rather than assuming that visible algae means it's getting enough to eat.
